A Holiday gift idea

by Mindful Merchant on December 14, 2010

If you are trying to make the holidays more about experiences rather than gifts, or encouraging your family to make presents, I have an idea that might appeal to you.

I thought of this craft when my father celebrated his 80th birthday.  He did not want anyone to buy him gifts, he felt had everything he wanted or needed.  He did ask for a lovely card or a picture from the grandchildren.

I asked our kids what they would like to make for their Grandfather.  They both wanted to draw him a picture.  The conversations lead to exactly why they love Grandad so much.  As they listed their reasons, I grabbed a pen and wrote down their response. Their answers surprised me.  They were touching and insightful and I showed them to my husband.  He suggested my father would appreciate reading their thoughts and the idea for this gift developed.

It is a beautiful thing to tell someone you love him or her.  Isn’t it even better to hear a few specifics as to why they are treasured?   I printed the girls’ responses on a piece of paper and they took their time decorating around the words.  The results were better than we imagined.

Some of their words…

My Grandad is special because…

He helps me dig for worms.

He spends time with me.

He knows how to build things and lets me try building stuff too.

Grandad is fun.

He looks at the bugs I collect.

He cheers loud for me when I play hockey.

I love my Grandad so much!

 My Grandad is important because…

He likes to hear what I have to say.

Grandad likes the stuff I make him.  He hangs it on the wall.

He always has time to play with me.

Grandad builds the best forts.

He makes me happy.

Grandad is funny.  He thinks I’m funny too.

I love my Grandad so much!

Another decorated poem

This craft can modify according to the child’s age and ability. I purchased inexpensive frames but crafty, artistic people could repurpose or make frames instead.

This gift was a big hit with my father.  He proudly hung the pictures in a high viewing traffic location guaranteeing plenty of oohs and aahs of admiration.  I think most people would find it touching to hear from their loved ones why they are so valued, important and special.

This was a fun activity to do with the kids.  If you are interested in a homemade, inexpensive gift or eco-friendly gift that is thoughtful and fun, you might want to try this.

To everyone celebrating Chanukah, Christmas or Kwanza – have a wonderful holiday.

Glad you liked the idea Jen. I bet your kids will do a beautiful job and they’ll be superstars when their grandparents open the gifts. Happy Holidays to you too. :)

This is a great idea and not just for little kids. It’s always nice to be appreciated for your good points, no matter who or when.
