Morgan’s Mile

by Mindful Merchant on April 20, 2011

I love hearing about philanthropic children.  It is inspiring to see young people with ingenuity, generous spirit and confidence to act.

This year we met such a person, a friend of our daughter and hockey teammate, Morgan.   First thing you notice about Morgan when you meet her is her warm and charming smile.  Then you might take note of her long beautiful hair.  Rapunzel sit down, this girl has fabulous locks.

Last September, Morgan told her hockey team about her decision to donate her hair.  She wanted to make a wig for a child that lost their hair during cancer treatments.  Morgan discovered it takes six ponytails, a minimum of 8 inches in length to make one wig.  Her goal is to collect a mile of hair and raise $500 for the Canadian Cancer Society.  Not only did she meet her fundraising goal, she surpassed it raising over $2100!

Morgan also spread the word on Rogers TV, the local paper, Facebook and Twitter too.  All her dedication has paid off; she has encouraged 17 other friends to donate their hair.

Did I mention, Morgan is 8 years old?

Tomorrow, April 21st Morgan and her friends are having a party, complete with cupcakes and free haircuts thanks to Jask Salon & Day Spa in Kanata.  If you ask Morgan why she is participating…her response is “Because I can”.

Way to go Morgan!  You and your friends are an inspiration.  I know two little girls that have started growing their hair to donate in the future because of you.

Your daughter plays hockey? Cool. This is a wonderful warm fuzzy story. Congratulations Morgan!

(FYI – I’m still not getting posts through email…you’re lucky I’m such a dedicated reader. lol )

If Morgan can do it because she can, what’s stopping us adults? :)

That is such an awesome story and an amazing little girl…Martina has also decided to cut her hair this June (after her communion) for cancer. They are all amazing little people.

LC – Yup…our girls play hockey. Glad you liked the story.

Andrea – I know…it’s humbling isn’t it? Kids are the best.

Carm – Martina too? Awesome. I just got a note from another friend, her daughter Kate just donated her too. I’m so proud to know all these great kids. :)
