Awesome

by Mindful Merchant on June 19, 2011

One word popped up three times Saturday morning. It was the strangest thing. My sister in law would tell me it is the universe sending me a message.  You know, I think she might be right.

Saturday morning I took advantage of a quiet house and woke early to catch up on some my neglectful blog reading.  Armed with a coffee I took my time surfing through my favourites.

Turtlehead is promoting once again her Summer of Awesome campaign. Lynn explores the city with her family and all its fun activities, playing tourists in Ottawa.  Her focus this summer is free and inexpensive activities mixed with lounging, lazing and other awesome summer time musts.  She had me at fun and frugal.  Sign me up!  Lynn even designed super awesome buttons to share on her website.  Thank you Lynn.

On to Knitnut…Zoom wrote a terrific post. How does she find these interesting stories?  She learned there is a group of friends called The Baseline Cowboys. Apparently, every Wednesday they drag a couch onto the lawn along Baseline Road, sit and enjoy bevvies with a sign hoping cars will honk and they wave.  Last week’s sign was “Spread the Awesome”.  They even have a Facebook Page you can join.  (honk, honk)

After a leisurely start Saturday, we took advantage of the beautiful weather and went for a walk. Gee, our little dog Crosby attracts a lot of attention.  His puny size, 9 1/2 lbs and poofy unruly fur make him the target of many “Aw, wook at the wittle puppy!” comments and the inevitable “Can we pat your dog? He’s sooo cute!”

Our walk took us surprisingly to the ice cream store. Crosby and I found a bench to wait, under the canopy of a big maple while the kids placed their order.  An elderly couple was out for a walk too. I assumed they were married from the matching wide brimmed hats.  Once they spotted us, the husband changed course pushing the wheelchair.

As they got closer, I slid over to one side of the bench thinking they were going to rest for a bit in the shady spot.  Actually, they came over to see the dog. We exchanged greetings and the man asked me if it would be o.k. if his wife petted Crosby.

Crosby is used to wheelchairs, walkers, kids and different noises. I knew he would be happy to receive some adoration and chin scratches after all; it had been at least 20 minutes since someone fawned over him.

I picked him up and placed him on my lap so he was level with the woman’s hands.  She only moved one hand and simply nodded in response to my questions.  Her bright eyes and smile confirmed she loved dogs. After a chat about the weather and dogs, the husband figured they should continue on their way. As he carefully backed up his wife’s wheel chair we heard loud and clear, “Awesome!”. She laughed and pointed at the dog.  Her voice and word selection made me smile and laugh too.

Great word, isn’t it?  Awesome.  Here’s to the start of an awesome summer everyone!

Even though it is pretty much perpetual summer here, the blues can still come and visit. Thanks for the “Awesome” message all the way from Ottawa. It helped make my corner of the world a lot more cheerful too. I especially liked that last story. Awesomely inspiring.
